Social Security is broken. As a country, we must honor the commitments that we have made. However, we cannot continue to operate under the current conditions.
I propose replacing social security for for those under 40 with an alternate plan. This will include individual term life insurance and disability insurance. Retirement contributions will go to an actively managed, individually owned retirement account.
Many companies already provide exactly these financial benefits for employees. They do so because they work. Under the alternate plan, employees and employers will pay the same rates as today. The only difference is that instead of handing money over to the government, individuals will invest in themselves.
Individuals over the age of 40 may elect to continue in the current system, or to switch over to the alternate plan.
