I am very much in favor of free trade. When individuals and corporations are able to engage with each other in a free market, consumers win. Ultimately, free trade is in the national interest of the US.

As President, I will work with Congress to ensure that free trade with other nations is the norm, not the exception.

Not every country believes this, or behaves this way.

Those countries that insist on imposing taxes or tariffs on the US will, in turn, face proportionate economic responses. In short, we will give other countries the trade situation they themselves demand. Partners who do not impose tariffs on the US will face none from us.

Economic sanctions against another nation should not be used except as tools to encourage and bring about lasting social and political change.
