I’ve been running a Facebook ad these past few days. The results have been interesting. A few new followers, a lot of people voicing support or derision.
I decided early on to keep negative comments off the ad, except for a couple that amused me. Seriously, no one needs to hear about your Trump fetish. No, I’m not kidding.
After a recent spate of vitriol, though, I thought I’d comment here.
I am pro-life.
No, I’m not pandering for votes. I have been pro-life since I was a teenager. I think that killing children – at whatever age of life, in the womb or out – is horrible. It’s state-sanctioned murder. Even more terrible – in the majority of cases, it’s done purely for convenience.
I think that if you claim to be a libertarian, adherence to principle requires acknowledgement that there are competing interests – mother and child. To claim that a mother’s bodily autonomy is absolute while ignoring the child’s right to life is disingenuous.
Worse – to pretend that there are not two people involved in the issue? To redefine what it means to be a human being to suit your argument? That is the height of hypocrisy. We don’t let anyone defending authoritarian government get away with that particular linguistic sleight of hand. Otherwise, why not define taxation as “not theft” while you’re at it? It’s just a clump of money, after all.
Stop pretending that there is no issue with abortion, or that the libertarian stance on it is somehow a settled argument. It is absolutely a difficult subject. Thankfully, it is one that libertarians – with their willingness to examine ALL sides of an issue – are uniquely capable of addressing.
I am thankful for that, and that there is a party of principle that I can work with and within. I am proud to be both pro-life and a Libertarian; and I hope that some day, the two terms will be synonymous.
